It shares the same ability to move music from one speaker to another or have the music played throughout the home to all available speakers, if the other units support Alexa. The Echo Dot's sound quality is better than the Google Nest Mini with more punch and clarity. Though delicious, it didn't really help with our computer.īut it works very well for basic operations and queries such as "What's the weather like next Tuesday?", "How many litres are in a gallon?" or "Put Tim Tams on the shopping list." The LED clock face display is shown very clearly on the cloth mesh surface even in the brightest daylight.

For example, the response to "Alexa, how do I format a Mac drive" was a recipe for mac and cheese. The underlying AI doesn't seem to be quite as accurate as Google in answering the many vague questions that you would put into a web search. However, the Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen seems to be an exception to the rule. Splitting your smart lights across Google and Alexa, for example, is just asking for trouble. Smart lights throughout the home, smart displays in the kitchen, security cameras outside and home entertainment products in the lounge room require a certain level of interoperability. When you buy into a smart home environment, whether it be Amazon (Alexa), Google (Hey Google) or Apple (Siri), it's difficult to introduce different products into the mix. Even if you're in a Google-dominated smart home, it still works well as a standalone smart clock radio. If you already have smart devices throughout the home that are operated by Alexa commands, then the Echo Dot 4th Gen with clock should be at the top of your shopping list. The sound quality is surprisingly good for a speaker no larger than a grapefruit. It can also prepare you for the day with news, weather and calendar updates as well as sorting out your shopping list. That said, a smart home hub that doesn’t also have a Z-Wave radio onboard is at a disadvantage to hubs-like the Samsung SmartThings-that do.The perfect clock radio for the smart home, the Amazon Echo Dot 4th Gen with clock provides soothing music to put you to sleep and rousing music to bounce you out of bed.

If you want a smart home hub, you’ll need to step up to either the Echo Plus or the Echo Studio, both of which have Zigbee radios onboard.

You can’t use the Echo Dot with Clock for direct control of your smart home devices unless those devices have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth radios onboard. It’s still not as pretty as the Nest Mini, but its physical buttons-apart from the absence of one to pause music playback-are easier to use. Using the Echo Dot with ClockĪside from the LED display, every component inside the Echo Dot with Clock is identical to the third-gen Echo Dot, so the user experience is exactly the same. Michael Brown / IDGĪsk Alexa about the weather, and the Echo Dot with Clock will display the outside temperature for you (don’t bother asking about temps inside the house, though).

You also have the option of creating a multi-room audio system with other Echo speakers, Echo Show smart displays, or Echo-compatible speakers, including Sonos smart speakers (the Sonos One, Sonos Beam soundbar, and the Sonos Move portable speaker), and the Polk Audio Command Bar. There’s a dual-band Wi-Fi adapter onboard, so you can connect it to either a 2.4GHz or 5GHz network. This smart speaker is very easy to set up, especially if you already have other Echo devices in your home, since the Alexa app will remember your Wi-Fi credentials-you can just pick the one you want to connect to from a list. In terms of music, you won’t find those last two features on the Nest Mini, but that smart speaker’s capacitive touch pause button is vastly superior to yelling “Alexa, pause!” Bass lovers, meanwhile, can pair one or two of these speakers (for stereo) with the Echo Sub for very good bass response. The Echo Dot with Clock delivers decent bass response for its size, but a comparatively muddy midrange makes it difficult to distinguish one instrument from another.īut you don’t need to rely on the Echo itself for audio reproduction: You can pair it with an outboard Bluetooth speaker, or you can plug in any self-powered loudspeaker that has a 3.5mm analog aux input. In terms of being a high-quality music speaker, the Echo Dot with Clock comes no closer than anything else in Amazon’s arsenal-save perhaps for the Echo Studio, which I’ll be reviewing next in fact, the Nest Mini delivers a superior sonic performance. The buttons on the Echo Dot with Clock are the same as the regular third-gen Echo Dot.
